How to Replace a Wristwatch Band by Yourselves

Changing a wristwatch band is a simple and cost-effective method for slightly altering a daily accessory. Most wristwatches now are designed so that the band is easily removed and swapped for a new band, whether for style or for function when the band is weathered and needs replaced.

1. Determine How the Current Band is Attached
Do not remove the original watch band without first carefully examining the way it is connected to the rest of the watch. Some watch bands simply snap on and off while others use small pins that work in the same way as tension rods. In order to properly replace a wristwatch band, the proper type must be purchased. Examining the original band before removing it will best show the type of band needed as well as the correct method of attachment. These steps will work for a spring bar wristwatch band.
2. Shop for a New Wristwatch Band
After determining whether the watch band is snapped on or attached with pins, shop for an appropriate replacement band. Consider all fashion and lifestyle choices when searching for a new band. Wristwatch bands are available in metal, plastic, rubber, leather, and many variations of these materials. There are also a variety of clasps, such as the traditional buckle and a butterfly clasp. The purpose of the wristwatch can help determine the appropriate replacement watch band. For example, a watch used for exercising would be more fitted to a plastic or rubber band than a decorative metal one. Additionally, if this is a replacement for fashion, make sure that the new band fits the desired style.
3. Use a Soft Cloth
A nice, soft cloth will serve as a cushion between the face of the watch and the surface during the process of changing the wristwatch band. Be sure to use a flat surface for this process, such as a table or countertop for the best results. Place the watch face down on this flat surface with the soft cloth between the watch and the table.
4. Release the Spring Bars
Begin by focusing on one of the straps. While the watch is face down, look underneath that strap where it attaches to the watch. Under the strap are spring bars that are used to attach the strap to the face of the watch. Use a spring bar tool for this part of the replacement. Place the tool on the end at the place where the strap attaches to the watch face. Carefully press down on the tool against the spring bar, and gently pull inward toward the center of the strap. This should loosen and then simply detach the spring bar. Set this spring bar to the side, and then repeat these steps to remove the other spring bar and strap from the other side of the watch face.
5. Grab the New Band
Once both halves of the old wristband have been removed, it is time to begin attaching the new band. It may be helpful to flip the watch back to a face-up position. This will further ensure that the new watch band will be placed on the correct sides of the watch face. The shorter wristband should be on the same side of the watch face as the 12 o’clock spot. The longer piece should be placed opposite of this. Once it is clear which end is which, flip the watch back to the face-down position. Grab one of the new spring bars, and carefully place it inside the end casing of one of the new straps. The new strap case may be a little tight from being unused, but using the prongs of the spring bar tool will open it up more easily. Make sure that both ends of the spring bar fit cleanly inside the strap. Once the new spring bar is tucked safely inside the new strap, ease the new strap into the notch on the watch face.
6. Adjust the Spring Bars
When the new strap is in place, move the spring bar up or down until it pops out both ends of the strap and secures itself in the watch face. There is typically a clicking sound when the spring bars are in the correct notch. Tug gently on the wristband to make sure that it has been securely placed. Once the first strap is in place, repeat this process with the other new spring bar and the other strap.
Place the second strap on the opposite side of the watch face in exactly the same manner. This one should also click when it is correctly in the notch. Make sure to pull gently on both ends of the wristwatch band to check for security. Examine the new watch band’s appearance with the watch face, and use the soft cloth to carefully clean the watch face and band after this process.
